TO THE FAMILY OF NICHOLAS OLENICK

My name is Harold Schuller.I am from Clifton, New Jersey. I want to thank you for making this email available to send my condolences. This morning, being from Northern New Jersey, I was on the internet looking up the airport where I had to learn to fly in 1953 in Wayne New Jersey, -Murchios airport. I was 18 years old at the time and used to work part time for John Syrek who used to operate that airport. I had the good fortune to have a flight instructor there called Nick Olenick who taught me how to fly in a Piper Cub. My uncle Thomas Coyte and Charlie Coyte were instructors at the airport. I subsequently left New Jersey. and moved to South Florida where I began a career in International Marketing but always continued flying as a hobby. I just read, sadly, that Nick had passed away in February of this year. Nick was my flight instructor and taught me how to fly in a Piper Cub that fall. I remember him as a fine human being, most important, and also a fine pilot and flight instructor. Always kind and patient. He soloed me after 7 hours. I was shocked and pained at his passing. I did not know that he was living in Port Jervis where I also have relatives. Although I moved to Florida when I was 20 years old in 1955 I have retained my roots and my love for Northern New Jersey all my life. I visit my family frequently in the Montclair -Clifton area. When I saw his photograph on the internet I remembered him at once. He used to wear a small, cloth khaki cap. I met him around the summer of 1953. He took me to the point of passing my private pilot license. He soloed me by simply asking me to pull the Piper Cub to one side, his exact words were, "I'll step out for a second. Go make three takeoffs and landings. If you haven't touched down by the time you get to where I am standing go around". After my third landing solo he climbed back in, we taxied back to the hangar where he and some of the pilots there tore the collar off my shirt and thumbtacked it to the office bulletin board along with many others. He shook my hand and congratulated me. I used to help around the airport. I knew a pilot called Bill Rody who used to give rides to tourists. I remember John Syrek , the operator and his sister Ann. A wave of sadness and emotion came over me when I saw Buck's photograph on the internet. A deep wave of sadness and pain went through me at the time which I'm still feeling as I write this letter. In 1955 I went to Florida to join my family's construction business and built houses for a few years while I finished college and then went on to be active in the international marketing field. I remember that Nick had taught me how to fly very safely and he told me to always add power every time I made a turn in any plane. -Even though modern airplanes are quite powerful and do not always need this technique, whenever I do it people ask me why I do it and I tell them it was Nick Olenick who had said it would keep me safe. -May this fine, good man rest in peace. I was an impressionable young man from Clifton at the time and he was important in not not only teaching me to fly safely but also in serving as an example with his patience and kindness. My deepest, deepest, condolences to his family. If any person would like to speak to me about what he was like, please call. I remember him as if it was yesterday. TO THE FAMILY OF PATRICIA HEMION

Even though Pat is no longer my mother-in-law I respected her for the 28 years that she was. She endured a lot, suffered a lot, remained quiet throughout, and now she is no longer dealing with that plan and suffering here on earth. May God grant her the peace she so rightly deserves in the next life. My condolences to the entire family for the loss of a sister, a mother, a friend, a grandmother. May you all find peace as well. TO THE FAMILY OF PATRICIA HEMION

Prayers and thoughts are with Pat’s family. She was the loveliest lady anyone could meet. We will miss her terribly. She was the best thing that ever happened to my brother Bub. They complimented each other so well. She was always so easy to talk to and I felt she was more like a sister I never had. She was very special to everyone who knew her. See you later Pat… Gary and Marilyn Hack
