April 17, 2020 To the family of James C. Gill Dear Ethel and family, It was with the deepest sense of sadness that I learned of the recent passing of your beloved husband, father and grandfather Jimmy Gill. Although the Lord has called him home Jimmy will live on fondly in the collective memory of all who knew him. This is especially true of all his colleagues in the Port Jervis Fire Department, where his dedication and service are unparalleled. What an exceptional pleasure it was for me to have known Jimmy and to have served alongside him in Howard Wheat Engine Company #4. I learned so much from him. Jimmy was so well loved and respected by his fellow firefighters throughout the entire region. This was especially true of members of Engine 4 to whom Jimmy was perpetually a great friend, the best teacher, the driving force, the moral conscience and the voice of reason in all things. He was approachable and always willing to share his vast wealth of knowledge and experience in firefighting. Jimmy always led by his shining example and no one worked harder than he. The hours that he spent in service to his community are incalculable. I can still see him meticulously repainting, cleaning and shining the firetruck for the annual Fireman’s Day Parade. He was amazing! He was the essence of volunteerism, the likes we shall never see again. He will be sorely missed. Jimmy was a kind and compassionate person and a friend to everyone. He always had such a deep and abiding faith in the lord. He lived an extraordinary and exemplary life. Perhaps a favorite of mine, Robert E. Lee, said it best when speaking of another quiet hero; “His strength of character and quiet courage set him apart. You may take solace in the fact that he is now unbound of his earthly shackles of toil and disease and enjoys peace in perfect form in the Heavenly Kingdom of the Lord. His purity of character, his service to the country and his devotion to God prepared him for the peace and rest he now enjoys. We are left to grieve at his departure, cherish his memory and prepare to follow. May God give us his grace, that through the mediation of his blessed son, we may be ready to obey his gracious summons.” May God bless you all and bring you peace and understanding during these dark days of sorrow and despair. My condolences to Pastor Coy’s family. When I was very young growing up on Hudson Street in Port Jervis Pastor Don would take me fishing. Those memories are still with me. His kindness and patience will always be my memories. Because of that I attended church services where he preached. Marvin Dunn

It has been a long time since someone who has passed has effected me emotionally. Jim was that person. Jim left me with many great memories that I still cherish today.
